Keynote Speakers

Lisa Burnapp
Guy's Hospital Renal Offices

Lisa Burnapp was appointed as a Consultant Nurse in Living Donor Renal Transplantation at Guy's & St. Thomas' NHS Trust following completion of her MA in Medical Law and Ethics in 2002. She has 24 years experience in renal nursing, and she has been involved with the living donor programme at Guy's & St. Thomas ' Hospitals since 1995. She is Consultant Nurse Advisor to NHS Blood & Transplant for their living donor kidney transplantation schemes, Co-Chair of the British Transplantation Society (BTS) Living Donor Transplantation Forum and served on the BTS Council from April 2004-2007. She is a member of the Human Tissue Authority Transplantation Working Group and was involved in training independent assessors and living donor transplant co-ordinators about the new arrangements under the Human Tissue Act. She has an active conference schedule, presenting at both national and international meetings.

Professor Simon Stewart PHD, FCSANZ, NFESC, FAHA
Group Leader, Population Studies and Profiling & Head, Preventative Health - Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute

Prof. Simon Stewart is the Head of Preventative Health at the world-renowned Baker IDI Heart & Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia (www.bakeridi.edu.au) and a National Health & Medical Research Council of Australia Senior Research Fellow. A past recipient of a prestigious National Heart Foundation of Australia Ralph Reader Fellowship (University of Glasgow, Scotland), his main focus of research has been developing community models of multidisciplinary care to optimize the prevention and management of chronic cardiac disease (e.g. chronic heart failure). Simon leads a range of large population-based research programs to monitor the evolving epidemic of cardiovascular disease in Australia (e.g. the Heart of the Heart Study in Central Australia) and beyond (e.g. the Heart of Soweto Study in Africa). As such, his research programs span from Sweden to South Africa and Melbourne to Central Australia. Simon is currently an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Cardiology and has published around 200 research papers and books relating to the epidemiology and management of cardiac disease.


Avril Henry
Avril Henry Pty Ltd

Avril Henry established her management consulting business in 2003, focusing on leadership, change management, talent management, diversity, recruitment and retention strategies.  In 2008 her business was one of the 5 finalists in the City of Sydney Business of the Year awards.

Over the last five years, Avril has delivered over 550 keynote addresses to over 50,000 people in Australia, New Zealand and Asia to companies and industries as diverse as IBM, BHP, Department of Defence, ATO, Queensland Health, Westpac, Astra Zeneca, Macquarie University, CPA Australia, and various Singapore government departments.
Avril was contracted in 2007 by the University of Western Sydney to develop a 3-year leadership program for their gifted scholarship students, to be delivered in addition to their academic studies to better prepare them for leadership positions in the future.

During 2006, Avril completed a Ministerial Review for the Minister of Defence, into Recruitment and Retention in the Army, Air Force and Navy.   Following the review, Avril was appointed as a Strategic Advisor to the Chief of Navy, and joined the Navy's Workforce Planning Committee. In 2006, Avril won the prestigious Lifetime Achievement in HR Award at the Australian Human Resources Awards, and in 2005,  was a finalist in the Sydney Business Review Business Woman of the Year.  She has held several board and business and government committee positions.
Avril is the author of several books and a co-author of three others, all focussing on leadership and diversity.


Dr Wendy Hoy
Professor of Medicine and Director of the Centre for Chronic Disease, University of Queensland

Dr Hoy is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Center for Chronic Disease at the University of Queensland.  Her work on high risk populations in the USA and Australia has helped promote expansion of nephrology’s focus beyond ESRD to early markers of risk and disease, and their conceptual integration with other chronic diseases. Her research addresses the epidemiology of renal disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, including intrauterine and early life events, and promotes multideterminant concepts of disease causation. It also addresses structural, ultrastructural and molecular markers of disease and disease susceptibility. It promotes primary and secondary prevention, outcomes research and cost-effectiveness evaluations.  


 

Guest Speakers

Julie Hartley-Jones
CEO Cairns and Hinterland Health Service District

Coming from a career specialty background as a renal nurse, Julie Hartley-Jones has been a guest speaker at many national and international conferences on renal care.

She was president of the European Dialysis and Transplant Nurses Association from 1997-1998 and was an International advisor to the National Kidney Federation of Singapore. Julie was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to renal nursing in the 2000 New Year’s Honours list.
As well as a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of London, Julie has a Masters of Business Administration from Oxford Brookes University at Oxford.

Julie arrived in Australia from the United Kingdom in 2006 and worked in management at the Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Health Service until her recent appointment as Chief Executive Officer of the Cairns and Hinterland Health Service District.

Dr. Carmel Hawley
Princess Alexandra Hospital

Dr. Carmel Hawley has been a full-time nephrologist at Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) since 1989 and was Director of the Nephrology Department between 1997 and 2002. Her current roles include clinical manager of the Haemodialysis Service at PAH, Inaugural and Current Chair of the Operations Secretariat of the Australasian Kidney Trials Network and Associate Professor, Department of Population Health, University of Queensland. Other past roles include Chair of the Clinical Practice Improvement Centre in Queensland (Renal Collaborative), Board Member of Kidney Health Australia (5 years) and Co-Chair of the CARI Biochemical and Haematological Guidelines and Member of the CARI bone guidelines group. In addition to being a nephrologist she has a formal qualification in Medical Statistics. She has > 100 publications and is actively involved in diverse clinical research areas. She has been, or is on a number of Advisory Boards particularly those relating to her major clinical interests which include dialysis, renal anaemia and/or renal bone disease.


Dr. Murty Mantha  FRACP, MD
Associate Professor (adjunct) James Cook University School of Medicine

Dr. Murty Mantha is a nephrologist and Director of Renal Medicine at Cairns Base Hospital.

He undertook his advanced training in renal medicine at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide, Westmead Hospital, Sydney (pancreatic and renal transplantation), and Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand.

He has expertise and a keen interest in interventional nephrology, and has created a ‘one stop’ shop for dialysis access related issues. He is the founding president of the Australian Society of International Nephrologists, and has been invited as a speaker and instructor in this field. He has made Cairns Base Hospital the premier training hospital in Australia for clinicians interested in developing skills in renal interventional procedures.



Jason Warnock
Chairperson of the Podiatry Board of Australia

Jason Warnock was born in Babinda, north Queensland. He is an experienced podiatrist working in Townsville for more than 28 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and management of the diabetic foot have been a focus of his professional interests. Jason has developed and manages the Indigenous Diabetic Foot program. This program provides information, resources and training for health workers and health professionals, to assist with the management of the diabetic foot. In 2008, he was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study Indigenous diabetic foot programs in Canada and USA. In 2009, Jason took on a new Queensland Health role as project manager of an allied health Models of Care project. This project involved reviewing the evidence of foot complications in renal clients and to trial podiatry involvement in the renal services in Townsville.  Jason is the Chairperson of the Podiatry Board of Australia.

Stephen Oldham
Care Group Australia Pty Ltd

Stephen has been a Registered Nurse for thirty years. Training under the “old fashioned” hospital system in the north of England his career has twist and turned through Acute Hospitals, Hospices, Community Health, Residential Nursing Care and small country Hospital settings.  He has held a wide range of leadership roles including Clinical Nurse Consultant, Nursing Unit Manager, Nurse Manager, Industrial Relations Professional, Deputy Director and Director of Nursing.

Fundamental to Stephens practice has been education, training and valuing every experience.  A variety of English National Board courses, a post graduate certificate in Palliative Care and a Masters in Clinical Practice has supported his clinical practice.

Stephen’s guiding principle is to develop a therapeutic relationship with people, especially those challenged by chronic health issues.  Incorporating a holistic approach including physical, social, emotional, mental health and spiritual needs of his clients has always underpinned his practice.

Stephen’s move to Far North Queensland was driven by the need for a Tree Change. He is currently a Company Director, Funeral Director and Funeral Celebrant of Care Group Australia Pty Ltd, a leading provider of Funeral Services. 

Stephen still works as an RN at his local hospital and two Nursing Homes - “ONLY” Casual Pool but as often as he can.  He is also committed to supporting a local suicide prevention project, a volunteer firefighter and active within his community.

Stephen lives near Mossman with his partner, three Dachshunds and a lot of creatures that will bite you as soon as look at you!

 

Bev Hamerton
Topic Coordinator, Remote Health Practice

In addition to being part of the teaching team for Remote Health Practice, Bev has worked as a Remote Area Nurse on Murray Island in the Torres Strait for the past six years. She is a graduate of the Remote Health Practice program. Bev has a passionate commitment to the principles and implementation of a Primary Health Care approach.
